Sweet Sixteen

So I feel really guilty about not posting anything since February. Things have gotten super busy outside of blogging and I've been trying to stay on top of my school work. Considering the fact that tonight is the first time in forever that I have a small amount of time to myself I figured I would spend it writing. I've been missing Freshmen Fashion and I'm happy to be back at it!

Here's a quick update with what I've been up to.

Last Thursday I turned 16, finally! That same day I went on a field trip with my art class to an art show in Boston and got my learner's permit afterwards.

I spent my Saturday in Boston with my best friend. We got dinner at one of my favorite restaurants, stopped at Mike's Pastry and Pinkberry, and then went on a mini shopping trip at Forever21. We certainly didn't let the rain get in our way.

I spent the rest of my weekend driving with my parents. I think I'm really getting the hang of it.

I would just like to take this time and say that I am very grateful for my loyal friends and family. I'm really lucky and I'm aware of that. I got to spend my birthday with the most important people in my life and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. 16 years isn't a lot when you put it into perspective but in these years, I know its corny, but I've learned many lessons. I've experienced mistakes and successes, losses and wins, but most importantly I've learned so much about myself and my own character and that is what I'm most proud of.

Life is always going to throw you challenges but its how you face them that shows who you truly are. I've had a lot of challenges tossed at me and I know that I will have many more but I can honestly say that I am happy with every conflict that has surfaced in my life. They have all made me a better person and I wouldn't change anything if I could.

I'm not the best at living in the moment but I am trying to take everything in and really enjoy life. I can't do anything about the past and regrets are a waste of energy. I'm happy with who I've become and I hope to continue down the road I'm on now.

Thank you to whoever took a few moment out of their day to read a post on my blog. I'm very thankful for you.

Continue to be who you are and do what you love.

These 16 years have been great and I can't wait to see what's ahead.

Flappy Bird: Major Fashion Statement?

There is nothing on this planet more frustrating than watching a little animated bird plummet to the ground.

If you can relate to this then you've definitely played a game or two of Flappy Bird. For those who haven't added to the irritations of your everyday life by downloading this game, you've probably heard about it through social media or through a friend or family member's aggravated yells at their phone.

But, is Flappy Bird just the world's most annoying game or is it also the next big fashion trend? You decide.

Check out these fashion picks that resemble your least favorite bird.

14 Ways to Revamp your Look for 2014

2014 is finally here and you've probably said to yourself something along the lines of "new year, new me".

If that's the case then it's time to take the next step whether it be big or small. Here are 14 ways to revamp your look for 2014.

1. Work one or more of Spring's new trendy colors into your wardrobe for a fresh vibe. Spring 2014 is all about neutrals, pastels, and brights so you'll have plenty to choose from. Pantone, world-renowned authority on color, recently named their color of the year and other popular colors for Spring 2014. Check out my post about these colors here.

2. Update your makeup whether you make a drastic change or a small one. Usually a nude lip gloss person? Try a bold lip and minimal eye makeup. All about cat eyes? Switch it up and try a smokey eye.

3. Invest in accessories. Purchasing a bunch of accessories is a much less expensive way to update your look. A new bag, scarf, or necklace will make your outfit look completely different. Look at how drastically the simple tee and jeans combo below changes with just a few accessory swaps. For more about the items featured click here.

4. Try a trend that is totally unlike you. Girly girl? Invest is a good leather jacket. Tom boy? Pick up a frilly frock in a super feminine color. There is always a way to make a piece that you usually wouldn't wear work for your style.

5. Update your favorite pair of shoes. Treat yourself to a new pair of boots, heels, or whatever you know you'll wear all the time.

6. Find your signature fragrance. I love Hailey by Aeropostale.

7. Reinvent something you never wear. Maybe try adding some studs or other embellishment.

8. Try a new hairstyle. You don't have to do anything drastic. Maybe add a few highlights or get side bangs. You'll look and feel completely different. If worse comes to worse hair grows back.

9. Go out and buy some new nail polish. I don't know about you but when my nails are done I feel so much better. Schedule one day a week to redo your nails. It makes a difference and you'll save money by doing them yourself.

10.  Invest in good skin are. Whether you have severe acne or a few breakouts here and there try your best to find a product or multiple products that work for you. If you need help seek the advice of a professional they'll know what's best for you. Everyone is different, a product that works for me and my skin may not do anything for you. Read my review of Neutrogena's Oil-Free Acne Wash here.

11. Follow some fashion blogs (hint, hint) and take note of looks you like and don't like. Then think about why you like or dislike them. This will help you figure out a lot about your personal style. Go the extra mile and get a Pinterest account and pin your favorite looks for future inspiration.

12. Try shopping your dad, brother, or boyfriend's wardrobe. Their unworn watch, tie, blazer, or sweater could become an awesome new statement piece for you.

13. Study up! Watch a movie or read a book that's filled with fashion forward inspiration. For fashion books I recommend click here

14. Own it. Once you've figured out your personal style (if you haven't yet that's ok too) own your look. You're the only you so flaunt what you've got.

Happy 2014!

Resolutions for 2014

Okay, so it's 5 degrees right now and blizzard Hercules did a number on my town.

I've been wanting to do an outfit post for a really long time but things keep getting in the way. For example mountains of snow, freezing weather, and I've just been all around pretty busy. I wasn't going to do a resolutions post but considering the fact that I can't go anywhere or do anything (not to mention the fact that I haven't changed out of my PJs or left the couch all day) I have changed my mind.
Here are a few of my resolutions for 2014.

1. Be an all around more positive person - I have a lot to be thankful for and sometimes I think I need to just wear a smile more often and be less of a pessimist.

2. Treat my hair better - When heat isn't needed I don't want to use it.

3. Blog my little heart out - I'm always trying to write exciting posts and come up with creative ideas.

4. Be more active on Twitter - I don't want my Twitter to just be a place to advertise my blog posts. I want it to be a place for me to give quick fashion related tips and talk about my daily life, like a mini blog.

5. Be more adventurous with my personal style - My style is not basic by any means I just feel like I've been wearing my own sort of uniform lately and I want to break that.

6. Write more about fashion news - Taking a Journalism class at school has really helped me learn how much I love writing about current events. I feel like since taking this class my writing has gotten much better. I want to blog about fashion news more often. Like new designer collaborations, new collections, and more. I think it will be fun and I'm looking forward to it.

7. Edit the design of my blog - I really want to change the look of my blog a little bit. Editing colors, font, etc. would be awesome.

8. More OOTDs! - I love blogging about what I wear in real life and how I put looks together. I want more frequent posts like those in the near future.

9. Blog more often - I blog whenever I can and always try to squeeze it into my day even if for only 15 minutes. Whether I use that time working on writing, coming up with ideas, or making collages on Polyvore. Now that I have the iPad I really want to have more posts go up in a week.

10. Enjoy 2014, have lots of fun, and take tons of photos - 2013 went by way too fast. Like waaaay too fast. I want to focus on really enjoying 2014 with my friends and family. I'll be graduating high school before I know it and a lot of my good friends are graduating this year. I want to make the best of  the next few years before I venture off to college. I also want to have lots of photos to document the rest of my high school career so I can look back on them later on in life.

What are some of your resolutions?

Happy 2014!

Holiday Gift Guide: The Blogger

Need assistance in Christmas shopping for a blogger? I'm here to help!
Here are 10 gift ideas for the blogging obsessed member of your gift list.

1. Nice Camera - Good quality pictures are key when it comes to any blog. Update your favorite blogger's current camera with a much better upgrade. I love my Nikon COOLPIX L120. It takes wonderful pictures and it was not too expensive. I use it for all the photos I take here on Freshmen Fashion.

2. Journal - Before I start a new post I always jot down notes on what I want it to include. An elegant journal like this one from Kate Spade would be a great place for a blogger to collect their thoughts and ideas.

3. Starbucks Gift Card - What blogger doesn't love Starbucks? They can use this card to buy their favorite Instagram-worthy drink.

4. #OOTD T-shirt- Almost every blogger out there has done the classic OOTD post. This fun tee is the perfect building block for any ensemble and your recipient will appreciate the blogging reference.

5. Calendar Whiteboard - Help your blogger plan out all their posts for the year with this cool whiteboard calendar. I have one just like it and you'd be surprised how useful it is. This one is nice because is features three photo openings.

6. Tripod - A tripod like this one by Sony is an excellent gift for a blogger because it will help make their blog's photo content even better. They'll be able to have their own photo shoots without having to enlist someone as photographer.

7. Man Repeller: Seeking Love. Finding Overalls. by Leandra Medine - Leandra is a fashion blogging legend. In her new book she shares personal stories and photographs along with recounts of her favorite "man-repelling" outfits. This is on my Christmas list this year.

8. Revlon Photoready Liquid Foundation - Bloggers are constantly behind the camera so good makeup is essential. This foundation is said to be ideal for any lighting even in photographs.

9. Laptop Case - When you're always on your computer it is nice to have colorful and cheery accessories. This MARC by Marc Jacobs 'Rabbit' Computer Case would make an awesome gift for your blogger.

10. Earbuds - Personally, I like to listen to music when I write for my blog. These edgy BCBG earbuds are a fantastic replacement for your typical white headphones.

Stay tuned for more gift guides.
I'll be posting a new guide each weekend right up until Christmas.

In the meantime, check out the rest of this year's guides.

MAC Lip Products

Over the weekend I visited my local MAC store in search of the perfect nude(ish) lipstick.  It was suggested to me by a salesperson that the shade Creme Cup may be what I was looking for. I tried it on and fell in love. It was the perfect color. Personally, I like my nude lipstick to be on the pinker side and Creme Cup was just that. After that I looked around the store and picked out a Dazzleglass in Sugarrimmed. I was immediately drawn to it's shimmery color. I thought it would look perfect over Creme Cup.

After wearing these two products for the past few days I have noticed that they are long wearing and both have great finishes. They look amazing by themselves or worn together.

I love both of my purchases and I will definitely be visiting MAC again soon.

I’m just now realizing that Freshmen Fashion is now over 1 year old. It is crazy to think that a year has passed. I have learned so much since starting this blog and it has introduced me to some awesome things and people. The fashion blogging community is very supportive of all of it’s members and I am happy to be one of those members.
It’s amazing how much can happen in a single year. I can’t believe that I will never be a high school freshman ever again. It's insane! Freshmen Fashion has been a place for me to talk about all of the things that I love and to share them with people who love them just as much as I do. I started this blog last summer to document my Freshmen year in fashion and to intermix my two greatest loves fashion and writing. I set out to showcase attainable fashion that was chic and affordable. I truly hope that my readers find inspiration from Freshmen Fashion.
I want  to say thank you to everyone who has visited Freshmen Fashion, read a post, left a comment, and followed. I love reading your feedback. It makes me feel great to think that people appreciate the things that I write about.
Personally, I believe that I have grown as a writer since my very first post written all the way back on June 12, 2012. I can only hope to better my writing and fashion knowledge in the future through this blog.
Thank you to everyone that has supported me over this past year. I greatly appreciate it.
I hope that Freshmen Fashion will introduce to me to even more amazing blogs, people, and opportunities over the next year.
Thank you so much,
BL

Girls' Day

Today I had a fun day out with my bestfriend. We went to the salon for a little bff time and to get our nails done for the concert we're going to on Saturday. My friend chose bright purple polish while I picked this reddish/pinkish color with cheetah accents.

My Recent Obsession: Tumblr

So, it happened. I finally started to use my Tumblr account and needless to say I'm obsessed. Not just obsessed, I'm check my homepage every 10 minutes obsessed. What I love most about Tumblr is that it's sort of like Intagram, Twitter, Blogger, and Facebook all in one. For random everyday stuff follow me on Tumblr. I upload stuff all day.

Gingham Style

Model on left is wearing a Button-Down Gingham-Print Top from Macy's Marilyn Monroe Collection. Model on right is wear an Essential Gingham Shirt from Forever21.
For Spring I've been noticing lot of gingham-prints especially in pastel colors. This classic print can be dressed up or dressed down and goes with almost anyone's style. Make it sassy by tying a knot and wearing it with white jeans and wedges or make it preppy with a blazer, tailored shorts, and ballet flats. The styling is all up to you. The classic gingham print shirt can be worn so many ways. It is definitely worth adding to your closet because it will never go out of fashion.

Legally Blonde Party

For my 15th birthday I decided to have a Legally Blonde themed party, mainly because I am obsessed with the movie (and have been for years) and partly because it gave me an excuse to dress like a Barbie for an entire day.

Guests received a fabulous jeweled collar from H&M, pink Hersey kisses, Sally Hanson nail polish,  Rimmel lip gloss, elf liquid eyeliner, a nail file, a heart-shaped charm bracelet, a jeweled mirror, and of course a pair of hot pink bunny ears just like the ones Elle wears in the movie. Mine of coarse had a pink tiara glue-gunned to them.

Decorations included pink feather boas, Harvard Law School posters, photos from the movie, a stuffed chihuahua, and a  pink Harvard t-shirt.

We played a game where we guessed how many diamonds were in this jar. The winner got a pink crystal jewelry set.

I loved these white paper decorations.

Guests munched on pizza and drank pink lemonade. For dessert there were marble cupcakes with hot pink frosting, pink cotton candy, cookies, and brownies.

Of course there had to be a snap cup!

The girls used pink feathery pens to write their "warm-fuzzies" about other party-goers in the snap cup.

This was from earlier in the week.
Always be yourself, unless you can be Elle Woods. Then, always be Elle Woods.
Since about two weeks ago I've been watching Legally Blonde, both 1 & 2, nonstop. I can now confidently quote this movie just as well as I can quote Mean Girls. I remember when I was younger I decided that I wanted to be a lawyer and go to Harvard after watching this movie. A part of me still wants to be the real life Elle Woods but I think I have a better place in fashion.

Happy Birthday to any of my fashionistas who celebrated in March. Best wishes.

BL
