Fall is pretty much synonymous fashion. There's nothing better than the brisk changing of seasons matched with a week's worth of new trends to make for that specific clean slate feeling. 

On September 23, at Royale Boston, Her Campus, a national online newspaper written for and by college women, hosted its annual College Fashion Week.

The 4th of July

To me, the 4th of July is the epitome of summer, red, white, and blue, warm weather, friends & family - nothing says summer better. This year I chose my new favorite top, a flowy, floral tank from H&M (it gives me total Dolce & Gabbana vibes) and paired it with dark skinnies, white Converse, bright red lips, and my new fave hairstyle. The look was casual, breezy, and the lips/eyeliner/hair combo gave it a bit of edge. As it got later and cooler outside I tossed on a tried and true denim jacket. Although it wasn't red, white, and blue I thought this was the perfect look for a summer night spent watching fireworks.

Game Day Style

Fall is almost here and with fall comes football season. Get ready to support your favorite team in style by wearing this simple and chic look, perfect for game day. 

Start off with your favorite team's jersey, I chose this Patriots one from Fanatics. For a bit of added warmth, layer your go-to denim jacket over the jersey and pair with dark wash jeans. As for accessories you can choose any that you'd like. I picked a pair of Steve Madden booties and a cranberry beanie to keep the look both stylish and comfortable. For a touch of something special, sport a large silver watch and deep red lipstick.

This look is casual and comfy but still feminine and chic. You can easily substitute your team's colors and jersey to make the look more personal to you.

Alexander Wang to Design for H&M

Swedish fashion retailer, H&M is famous for teaming with big name fashion designers such as Stella McCartney, Versace, and Isabel Marant. In November of this year H&M will be adding a new designer to their long list of collaborations, Alexander Wang.

Wang will be the first American designer to create a collection for H&M. Known for his innovative, edgy, and wearable designs, it seems as though Wang is the perfect candidate to partner with everyone's favorite clothing store.

For being only 30 years old, Wang is one of the most successful designers in America. Wang received a huge honor in 2008 when he won the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, helping him to progress his collections even further. Another large success came soon after in 2009 when Wang was awarded the CFDA’s Swarovski Womenswear Designer of the Year Award.

Now Wang is responsible for three different labels. He established Alexander Wang in 2007 and T by Alexander Wang was launched in 2009. In 2012 Wang was named Balenciaga's creative director.

On November 6, 2014 Wang's collection with H&M will be launched. It will include both womenswear, menswear, and accessories. As with most of H&M’s designer collaborations it is expected that Wang’s designs will fly off the shelves.

Lauren Designs Team USA's Olympic Ceremony Looks

Making it to the Olympics is a dream for many of the nation’s athletes. There is a powerful association with representing your country and wearing your Team USA gear.

Most Americans who are not athletes live vicariously through Team USA. The Olympics pull the entire nation together and people show their pride in our country.

Everyone wants Team USA to represent the nation's best assets while competing and make the country look as wonderful as possible.

For me, one of the things I always look at during the games is what the athletes are wearing. I want Team USA to look powerful, confident, classy, and All-American.

Personally, I think a team’s uniform says a great deal about their country. It's what people see first about a nation while watching the games at home. So that uniform better be a great representation.

This year, American designer, Ralph Lauren has designed Team USA’s uniforms for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Lauren first won the contract to outfit USA’s athletes in 2008 for the Summer Olympics in Beijing. He has designed the team’s official ceremonial outfits ever since.

His partnership with Team USA was running smoothly until it was discovered that the uniforms designed for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London had been manufactured in China. This information was upsetting to American officials and U.S. senators created the Team USA Made In America Act of 2012 in order to make it a requirement for all USA Olympic uniforms to be officially produced and manufactured in the United States.

Even after this controversy Lauren went on to design for this year’s Olympic Ceremony. His designs are not out of the norm. They include classic Polo shirts which were to be expected along with sweaters, cardigans, sweatshirts, sweatpants, and pea coats, all made in the USA.

In my opinion the sweaters look outdated. They are covered with large knit American flags, the Olympic logo, snowflakes, reindeer, and other designs. Looking at one might conjure up the thought of an 80’s Christmas sweater.

The American flag and the Olympics logo are both things to be extremely proud and supportive of but I wish the cardigans and sweaters were just toned down a bit

I have to say the best part of Lauren’s Olympic collection is his pea coat. It’s navy with a single red stripe and features the official logo for the U.S. Olympic Team and Lauren’s signature pony. Overall, very nice. The coats definitely have the All-American look and also a regal and powerful vibe.

I don't really care for the sweatpants that Lauren created for the Olympic ceremonies. Yes, they’ll keep our competitors warm, but for the ceremony a nice pair of dress pants would have been much more appreciated in my eyes.

Lauren designed the Opening and Closing Ceremony looks for Team USA. Nike will be providing the uniforms that athletes will actually be competing in.

Other countries’ Olympic Collections are either hits or misses. France looks clean and modern with minimalistic blazers, pants, and sweaters designed by Lacoste. Sweden’s uniforms designed by H&M give a modern twist to Sweden patriotism. My personal favorite goes to Estonia who’s Olympians will be looking very chic in black and white sweaters, jackets, and hats.

My question and many other's is should Lauren continue to design for Team USA in the future?

You’d think with his popular preppy All- American style that he would turn out the perfect fashion representation for our team, but in some cases I think he went a bit over board. The sweaters are too much but the Polos and pea coats are a step in the right direction. Lauren has been in charge of Team USA’s fashion choices for awhile so maybe it's time to see what someone else can do.

I’d love to see Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, Kate Spade, Tom Ford, or even Rag & Bone design a collection for Team USA. I think each would bring a cool, modern twist to the preppy style the U.S. is known for.

I can see team USA blazers, collared shirts, and cardigans with each of these designer's spins on them and I think any of them would do a great job.

Yes, I think Lauren’s everyday designs apart from his Team USA collection really show off an Americana look. It doesn't get any more American than a Polo, jeans, a plaid button-up, or khakis. Even his more runway ready looks have a very American aspect to them. They are tailored, classic, elegant, and dignified, all of which describe the USA. I can find pieces on his website from any of his lines completely unrelated to the Team USA Collection that our Olympians would look wonderful styled in.

I don’t have any problem with Lauren designing for Team USA. I think he’s a great fit. What I would like to see is for him to modernize his designs for the Olympics and bring a bit of an edge from his Black Label and other line, Denim & Supply Co. to the pieces.

At the next Olympics I hope to see Lauren fit Team USA in looks that show the unique and classic elements that are shown in The United State’s ever evolving fashion scene.

Music Meets Fashion: How the Industries are Influencing Each Other

I'm a huge music and fashion fan. So it's safe to say that I love the Grammys. I love seeing my favorite artists perform live but most importantly I love seeing what they're wearing.

It seems to me that the music industry, especially in the past few years, has really been influencing the fashion industry. It's no surprise to see a boy-band heartthrob or a chart topping popstar exquisitely dressed sitting front row at some of the most well known designer's shows at fashion week. Nor is it surprising to see them designing their own line for that matter. It has become more and more common to find out that a famous musician has become a high fashion muse - for example Lady Gaga and Versace or Miley Cyrus and Marc Jacobs.

Many of these musician muses have been featured in ad campaigns in the place of super models. Why? In my opinion I think it has to do with how much the singers and musicians have been influencing this generation.

Personally, I don't have any problem seeing Cyrus or Gaga in an ad campaign. I think their own personal styles really fit nicely with the design houses they are the face of and honestly I enjoy seeing them wear that designer. Gaga in Versace is just perfection.

I just find it interesting how much music really does influence our clothing choices. We might find some of these famous popstars' styles to be a little bit over the top but I think we seem to emulate them unknowingly.

For instance think of all the hairstyles celebs like Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Beyonce, Cyrus, and Gaga have had. At first we think they're really out there but just look at how huge the bright and pastel colored hair trend has grown since Perry's bright blue "California Gurls" hair made its debut. After a while these seemingly crazy trends find their way into our own wardrobes.

The relationship between music and fashion also works the other way around. Gaga has a song called "Donatella" and Tom Ford's name has been dropped a good amount of times by other artists. These popular musicians are shining light on the fashion industry and bringing attention to some incredible fashion powerhouses.

Yes, these musicians' senses of style may be a bit out of the ordinary, but you know what? I applaud them for it. At times maybe their fashion choices may be used to create headlines and publicity for their latest endeavor but that's not always the case. 

I think sometimes we don't think about the fact that is takes guts to walk down the red carpet in these eccentric get ups. Think about it. Would you personally walk out of the house in a dress made out of meat without questioning your outfit? No, you'd probably second guess yourself. 

So cheers to the musicians who are confident enough to rock lights, neon hair, crazy platform heels, funky glasses, and any other fashion risks. 

We have to give thanks to these people because we wouldn't have anything to talk about or look at without them. You can only comment on so many ball gowns and little black dresses. 

So go ahead and live vicariously through Gaga's wigs and Katy's glittery get ups and let's say thank you to our unique musical fashion daredevils.

The Bethany Mota Spring Collection to Make Its Debut

Bethany Mota, you may know her as Macbarbie07, is only eighteen-years-old but she's living out every teenage girl's dream (well, at least mine). She's the designer of her very own fashion collection in partnership with the huge American retailer, Aéropostale.

It all started when she was thirteen-years-old and made her very first YouTube video as an outlet to escape bullying. Since Mota’s beginning in YouTube’s famous beauty community a lot has changed.

Flash forward to now. Mota has over 4 million YouTube subscribers, more than 1 million Twitter followers, and over 2 million Instagram followers. She’s a social media celebrity.

Not everyone knows who Mota, the beauty and fashion guru, is but huge companies have taken notice of her and her videos. On December 8, 2013 Aéropostale launched its brand new Bethany Mota Collection. This collection was designed by Mota along with Aéropostale’s design team.

The line was inspired by Mota’s own personal Californian style (think beanies, graphic tees, and crop tops) and her many fans who all seem to love the new clothes. 

Like other celebs Mota has a nickname for her beloved viewers and fans, Motavators. Many of these fans have been wearing their MOTAVATOR t-shirts in support of their favorite YouTube sensation and her new endeavor.

The launch of Mota’s first collection for Aéropostale was so successful that her Spring Collection will be making its debut shortly. There is an option on Aéropostale’s website where fans can unlock outfits from the Spring lookbook before they are released by tweeting the hashtag #MOREMOTA. The first look is already 97% unlocked (according to my last refresh) and will most likely be open for viewing by the end of the day.

Judging by Mota’s winter pieces, the Spring Collection will most likely include floral patterns, skater skirts, feminine details, animal motifs, and graphic tees. Overall buyers can expect fun, wearable, and most of all affordable fashion from this YouTube fashion and beauty superstar.

14 Ways to Revamp your Look for 2014

2014 is finally here and you've probably said to yourself something along the lines of "new year, new me".

If that's the case then it's time to take the next step whether it be big or small. Here are 14 ways to revamp your look for 2014.

1. Work one or more of Spring's new trendy colors into your wardrobe for a fresh vibe. Spring 2014 is all about neutrals, pastels, and brights so you'll have plenty to choose from. Pantone, world-renowned authority on color, recently named their color of the year and other popular colors for Spring 2014. Check out my post about these colors here.

2. Update your makeup whether you make a drastic change or a small one. Usually a nude lip gloss person? Try a bold lip and minimal eye makeup. All about cat eyes? Switch it up and try a smokey eye. 

3. Invest in accessories. Purchasing a bunch of accessories is a much less expensive way to update your look. A new bag, scarf, or necklace will make your outfit look completely different. Look at how drastically the simple tee and jeans combo below changes with just a few accessory swaps. For more about the items featured click here.

4. Try a trend that is totally unlike you. Girly girl? Invest is a good leather jacket. Tom boy? Pick up a frilly frock in a super feminine color. There is always a way to make a piece that you usually wouldn't wear work for your style. 

5. Update your favorite pair of shoes. Treat yourself to a new pair of boots, heels, or whatever you know you'll wear all the time.

6. Find your signature fragrance. I love Hailey by Aeropostale.

7. Reinvent something you never wear. Maybe try adding some studs or other embellishment.

8. Try a new hairstyle. You don't have to do anything drastic. Maybe add a few highlights or get side bangs. You'll look and feel completely different. If worse comes to worse hair grows back. 

9. Go out and buy some new nail polish. I don't know about you but when my nails are done I feel so much better. Schedule one day a week to redo your nails. It makes a difference and you'll save money by doing them yourself. 

10.  Invest in good skin are. Whether you have severe acne or a few breakouts here and there try your best to find a product or multiple products that work for you. If you need help seek the advice of a professional they'll know what's best for you. Everyone is different, a product that works for me and my skin may not do anything for you. 11. Follow some fashion blogs (hint, hint) and take note of looks you like and don't like. Then think about why you like or dislike them. This will help you figure out a lot about your personal style. Go the extra mile and get a Pinterest account and pin your favorite looks for future inspiration. 

12. Try shopping your dad, brother, or boyfriend's wardrobe. Their unworn watch, tie, blazer, or sweater could become an awesome new statement piece for you. 

13. Study up! Watch a movie or read a book that's filled with fashion forward inspiration. For fashion books I recommend click here. 

14. Own it. Once you've figured out your personal style (if you haven't yet that's ok too) own your look. You're the only you so flaunt what you've got.

Summer Favorites 2013

Farewell Summer, hello Fall! 

Here's a quick recap of all my summer favorites from muscle tees to midi rings.

1 - e.l.f. liquid eyeliner 
I picked this up for $1 at Target and it's amazing for the price. It lasts all day for me and compliments the rest of my makeup.

2 - Maybelline Cover Stick Correcter Concealer
I purchased this on a whim because I just wasn't satisfied with my usual concealer. Turns out it's a much better product than the one I was using. It blends beautifully, gives great coverage, and looks natural.

3 - Midi Rings
I stumbled on the mini ring trend while surfing through pictures on Pinterest. The next time I went to Forever21 I bought a set of two and have been wearing them nonstop. I think they're so unique and feminine.

4 - Boston Alex and Ani Bracelet
I saw this bracelet on my friend and wanted so bad. I finally stopped in the Newbury Street Alex and Ani store and bought one. I wear it everyday.

5 - Forever21 Jeans
The cheapest pair of jeans I own have become my favorite. The color doesn't fade and they fit me like a glove. Need help finding the right pair of jeans for your body? Click here.

6 - Denim Vests
I talk about my love for denim jackets a lot here on Freshmen Fashion. I was having a hard time giving them up for the hot weather so I marched into H&M and bought a denim vest on sale for $15! What a steal!

7 - French Manicures
I like the way nail designs look but I'm horrible at doing them on my nails. Turns out French manicures are something I can handle. I use these awesome nail guides I found at Walmart.

8 - Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick - Kate Moss Collection
I like adding a pop of color to black and white outfits. My favorite red lipstick is by the Kate Moss Collection from Rimmel. It's smooth, matte, and long wearing.

9 - Muscle Tanks
Muscle tanks are my favorite because they're easy to throw on, casual, and comfortable.

I’m just now realizing that Freshmen Fashion is now over 1 year old. It is crazy to think that a year has passed. I have learned so much since starting this blog and it has introduced me to some awesome things and people. The fashion blogging community is very supportive of all of it’s members and I am happy to be one of those members.

It’s amazing how much can happen in a single year. I can’t believe that I will never be a high school freshman ever again. It's insane! Freshmen Fashion has been a place for me to talk about all of the things that I love and to share them with people who love them just as much as I do. I started this blog last summer to document my Freshmen year in fashion and to intermix my two greatest loves fashion and writing. I set out to showcase attainable fashion that was chic and affordable. I truly hope that my readers find inspiration from Freshmen Fashion. 

I want  to say thank you to everyone who has visited Freshmen Fashion, read a post, left a comment, and followed. I love reading your feedback. It makes me feel great to think that people appreciate the things that I write about. 

Personally, I believe that I have grown as a writer since my very first post written all the way back on June 12, 2012. I can only hope to better my writing and fashion knowledge in the future through this blog.

Thank you to everyone that has supported me over this past year. I greatly appreciate it.

Fabulous Find of the Week

Dip-Dye Maxi Tube Dress, Charlotte Russe, $28.99

This week's fabulous find comes from one of my favorite stores, Charlotte Russe. I was in search of the perfect maxi dress and today I found it (and for a great price too)! This fun maxi is going to be perfect for the warm summer days to come. I can't wait to wear it!

A Day in Boston

Adventures in Target

There's just something about this kooky floral hat. I found this lovely "treasure" at Target while I was on the hunt for a black and white Red Sox snapback. This one sort of reminds me of Hawaiian shirt. Anyways... still on a mission to find that Red Sox hat.

Legally Blonde Party

For my 15th birthday I decided to have a Legally Blonde themed party, mainly because I am obsessed with the movie (and have been for years) and partly because it gave me an excuse to dress like a Barbie for an entire day. 

Guests received a fabulous jeweled collar from H&M, pink Hersey kisses, Sally Hanson nail polish,  Rimmel lip gloss, elf liquid eyeliner, a nail file, a heart-shaped charm bracelet, a jeweled mirror, and of course a pair of hot pink bunny ears just like the ones Elle wears in the movie. Mine of coarse had a pink tiara glue-gunned to them. 

Decorations included pink feather boas, Harvard Law School posters, photos from the movie, a stuffed chihuahua, and a  pink Harvard t-shirt.

We played a game where we guessed how many diamonds were in this jar. The winner got a pink crystal jewelry set.

I loved these white paper decorations.

Guests munched on pizza and drank pink lemonade. For dessert there were marble cupcakes with hot pink frosting, pink cotton candy, cookies, and brownies. 

Of course there had to be a snap cup!

The girls used pink feathery pens to write their "warm-fuzzies" about other party-goers in the snap cup.

Always be yourself, unless you can be Elle Woods. Then, always be Elle Woods.

Since about two weeks ago I've been watching Legally Blonde, both 1 & 2, nonstop. I can now confidently quote this movie just as well as I can quote Mean Girls. I remember when I was younger I decided that I wanted to be a lawyer and go to Harvard after watching this movie. A part of me still wants to be the real life Elle Woods but I think I have a better place in fashion.
