Golden Rules

As I mentioned awhile ago, I love reading books, especially ones that involve fashion in some way. For Christmas I received Gunn's Golden Rules: Life's Little Lessons for Making It Work by Tim Gunn. I just started reading it a few nights ago and I can already tell that Mr. Gunn and I share some of the same values. He has a strong belief that being polite will always get further in life then being rude. I firmly agree.

Gunn's Golden Rules: Life's Little Lessons for Making It Work

My favorite chapter so far is "Rule Two: The World Owes You... Nothing". In this world some people believe that they can get away with anything because of who they are. I absolutely love Tim Gunn's thoughts on this. The stories he shares in this book are wonderful. Its as if you are sitting down with him at a little cafe having a casual conversation. If you love the fashion industry and believe in kindness then this is definitely a book you'd like. There is an obvious reason why Tim Gunn was chosen to be the Project Runway mentor. He is insightful and certainly knows what he's talking about. Gunn's Golden Rules is a lovely book.

What's In My Bag

What we carry around with us every day says so much about who we are. Here is what I carry around in my bag when I'm on the go.

My fabulous kitty, Peaches, wanted to be featured.

Some of my favorite bags are by Steve Madden and Betsey Johnson. Currently, I've been rocking a brown Steve Madden messenger bag with gold hardware  I love it! Here's what I fill it with (Starting from the top left corner)

- Texas Instrument Calculator: I carry this around with me during the week so that I'm always prepared in math class. I love this one because its hot pink with army print details (totally trendy!)

- Static Guard Spray: This stuff is a total lifesaver! I use so much of it. If my hair is static-y when I wake up I'll spray some on my brush. If I'm wearing my favorite pea coat I'll spray some on the collar to prevent static-y clothes and hair. Its perfect for the wintertime because it really helps with flyaways and sticky clothes. Not to mention its really inexpensive.

- Tissues: A total essential! You'd never guess how much having a travel size pack comes in handy (especially during cold/flu season). Plus, the tribal print packaging is so cute!

- Small Digital Camera: I don't always carry one around but sometimes if I know I might be needing one I'll bring my small pink digital Polaroid i735 camera opposed to my Nikon Coolpix L120 which is much larger/bulkier.

- eos Lipbalm: My friend Meghan introduced me to this product and I have been obsessed with it ever since! The one pictured is in Sweet Mint which is super minty (obviously) and refreshing. I also love Strawberry Sorbet, which I usually use when I wake up.

- Assorted Pens, Pencils, and Highlighters: These are mainly for school but I leave them in there all the time. I  always carry around a mechanical pencil, a black ballpoint pen, a pink highlighter, and an art pencil (for all my art kids I prefer a 6B, 4B, or H)

- Pop-up Hairbrush: I love this thing. Basically, its a pop-up hairbrush on one side and a mirror on the other. So awesome!

- Band-aids: This is sort of embarrassing but I fall... a lot. So I've learned that keeping band-aids around all the time is a very good idea. These are my favorites they are the Cynthia Rowley Band-aids which I think is pretty awesome.

- Makeup Bag & Makeup: I always carry around a bunch of lip products in my super cute polka dotted makeup bag. Right now I'm carrying around a NYX lipgloss in Gold Pink, a NYX lipstick in Narcissus, a Maybelline Baby Lips lipbalm in Pink Punch, and a Rimmel London lipgloss in Fuschia Fever. Also in my makeup bag I carry a pressed powder compact (not pictured), a makeup sponge, a ponytail holder, bobby pins, and Gold Bond lotion.

- Hailey Fragrance Rollerball: I have always loved this scent by Aeropostale. They just started making it in a rollerball which is perfect for applying during the day.

- Large Gold Hoop Earrings: You never know when you'll need to add a fun accessory.

- Sunglasses and Case: Aviators are my favorite style.

- Earbuds for my iPod

- Mini Flashlight: This also somewhat embarrassing, sometimes I use this to locate things I need in my bag.

Sweet Pea Handsanitizer: A huge necessity during cold/flu season. I use this all through the day.

Pink Fragrance Mist: I love this scent. I apply it after P.E. to freshen up. For my bag I have it in the travel size.

- Dogs Lanyard: I show off some Bulldog Pride by putting my keys on this awesome lanyard.

- Assorted Gum: This one pretty much self-explanatory

- Betsey Johnson Wallet: I love this! Find a similar one here!

- Black Faux Leather Gloves: A stylish way to keep your hands warm.

I hope you guys enjoyed reading about what I carry around with me on a day-to-day basis. I had a really fun time with this post.

Quote of the Week III

"You can wear whatever, be whatever, do whatever you want."
 —Christian Siriano
Honestly, I believe that anything is possible. You can truly do whatever you want. You may think that your dreams seem so very out of reach but really when you think about it they aren't. As long as you're trying your hardest to get where you want to go you never know what may happen. If you're just sitting around saying, "I'm never going to _________." you won't be successful. You have to make your dreams reality and that's not going to happen if you keep saying to yourself, "I can't do it." because really you can! As I always say no matter what happens in your life always be yourself and establish who you are as an individual.

Menswear Monday

Recently, I've been loving menswear inspired pieces. I think that the trick to rocking this look is to add a hint of femininity whether it be in shape, pattern, or color. I styled my classic white shirt with a black tie and edged it up with a leather jacket, navy skinny jeans, and oxfords.

Dollhouse Jacket (similar), Converse Onestar Shirt  (similar), Calvin Klein Tie (similar), LC Lauren Conrad  Jeans,  Rainbow Oxfords (similar)

Here are a few great menswear inspired picks so that you can create a look of your own.

H&M blazer, Forever21 bow tie, H&M oxfords, Macy's Tuxedo Pants, Forever21 ties (123), H&M  hat (SOLD OUT), H&M suspenders, H&M belt

- The blazer shown above has a great shape to it that will give you an hourglass figure.
- A bow tie like this plaid one is a quirky alternative to the typical tie.
- I am a huge fan of oxfords and the ones pictured would be perfect for any menswear inspired look.
- Oxfords are stylish and comfortable.
- Tuxedo pants in a skinny cut like these ones have a menswear vibe but will flatter a women's body.
- I love to rock a great tie. These ones from Forever21 come in a great range of colors and patterns. A hot pink tie gives a girly  to an otherwise masculine look.
- A fun hat and cool suspenders are unexpected and totally chic.
- A simple black leather belt is a must have.

Quote of the Week II

"Whatever your life's work is, do it well. A man should do his job so well that the living, the dead, and the unborn could do it no better." —Martin Luther King, Jr.
In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day this week's quote is by none other than Martin Luther King Jr. himself. I 110% agree with this quote. In order to be successful in life I think you have honestly have to love what you do and do it well. If you're stuck doing something that you hate everyday then you're going to be miserable. If you love your work then there is a better chance you will be happy, and who doesn't want to be happy? Do what you love, love what you do.

My Recent Obsession: Pinterest

Usually, when I write a "My Recent Obsession" post, I'm obsessing over a campaign photograph I saw i na magazine or a recent fashion trend but not this time. The last few days I've been hopelessly addicted to Pinterest!

It's All The Rage: Spring 2013 Trend Predictions

It's almost springtime so I decided to showcase a few trends that I think we'll be seeing a lot of this season.
Disclaimer: Trends are all fine and dandy but please, please, please put your own spin on them! Fashion is about showing your personality. It's okay to try out a trend but don't go overboard in an entirely over-trendy look. In my opinion showcasing your own style is fashion-forward not dressing in total trend.

1. Art Deco Jewelry
I've been seeing graphic statement jewelry everywhere. I especially love this gold cutout necklace.

2. Button-up Blouses
Button-up blouses have been popular for awhile now and I think they will continue to be during the spring months especially in bright and pastel colors.

3. Black & White
I think black and white is going to be a HUGE trend this spring along with B&W bold graphic prints.

4. Round Lens Sunglasses
In my opinion, round lenses and over sized frames are going to make up the season's most coveted style when it comes to sunglasses.

5. Tailored Shorts
With warmer weather season on its way its time again for shorts. Unlike last year's distressed, ombre dyed, and studded cut-offs I think this spring's shorts will be more tailored and toned down.

6. Studs
Studded bags, shoes, and sweaters have been one of the hottest trends this fall and winter. I think that studded clothing and accessories will continue to be popular in the upcoming months.

7. Statement Shoes
When it come to shoes this spring think the more unique the better. Chunky heels, bright colors, and fun designs will be all the rage

Quote of the Week

“Fashion is not necessarily about labels. It’s not about brands. It’s about something else that comes from within you.” —Ralph Lauren
I love this quote. It is completely true. You could be wearing the most exquisite million dollar outfit but if you have a frown on your face and a horrible attitude then people are going to be less likely to want to get to know who you are. Don't get me wrong I love fashion and I really appreciate designer labels but you don't need overly expensive things to be "fashion-forward". Fashion shouldn't be about who's outfit cost the most money. It should be about showing the world your personality without having to say a single word. Basically what I'm trying to get across here is that having a love for fashion is wonderful but always make sure that you are true to yourself.
