Gift Guide: The Makeup Lover

When I first decided that I wanted to do a gift guide series for the holidays I automatically started thinking about characters to base the gift guides on. Then I decided that one of the guides had to be dedicated to the makeup lover.  I myself really enjoy makeup but don't know everything there is to know about it. I usually stick to my comfort zone and use just about the same products everyday rarely switching up my beauty routine. One of my friends has a love for makeup products and experimenting with different looks. When I thought about this post I instantly decided who better to write a summary on the best  makeup gifts than this friend.

Please welcome Freshmen Fashion's very first guest editor, Meghan. You may know her by her YouTube screen name meg285xo.

Meghan (left) & me (right) before our homecoming dance last month.

Here's Meghan's gift guide for the makeup lover:

1.) e.l.f. Gem 11-Piece Ultimate Gem Collection ($25) -  "Great idea for a friend who likes makeup and doesn’t have any brushes. In my collection of makeup brushes I use a majority of e.l.f. brushes because they are inexpensive and good quality. Also, if you have a friend who has a lot of makeup these could be a fun collector's item for them to receive."
2.) Korres Lip Butter ($12) - "These products are very inexpensive but amazing! There is a wide variety in the color selection to fit just about any one on your gift list. Even if you are buying for someone who isn’t head over heels into makeup all girls love a good lip balm."
3.) Maybelline The Falsies Volum Express Total Eye Look Kit ($10)  - "This great holiday gift comes with an eyeshadow quad, an eye liner, and a The Falsies mascara - one of my favorites! This gift item is great! It comes with great quality products that won't break the bank!"
4.) Hard Candy Holiday Glow Makeup Set ($5)  - "This cute kit includes 3 eyeshadows, 1 eye primer, and a blush and bronzer duo. Hard candy is an extremely pigmented brand and I highly recommend them. This kit is great to give as a stocking stuffer or if you're on a budget this kit will make a great present!"
5.) Stila Tiki Set Lip Glaze Trio ($8) - "These three gorgeous lip glosses will suit any skin tone. Having such high end glosses for under $10 is an insane deal, perfect for all of your friends!"
6.) Benefit Sexy Little Stowaways ($34)  - "This kit includes a lot of trial size products that makes it easy for a skeptical makeup lover to try a bunch of products. This is ideal for a family member or girlfriend and is a great price."
7.) Urban Decay Naked Palette 1 or 2 ($50) - "Both of these palettes are simply gorgeous! I personally own Naked 1 and use it daily. It contains all of the neutral shadows a girl could ever need." (Naked 1: http://www.sephora.com/naked-palette-P267200?skuId=1324532, Naked 2: http://www.sephora.com/naked2-P302916?skuId=1393636)

My Recent Obsession: Dollhouse Denim Jacket

In the fall of last year I made an impulse buy. I purchased a distressed studded denim jacket from Macy's by the brand Dollhouse. The reason for this impulse buy? It was on clearance. For $10. So of course being the person I am, I bought the jacket for back-to-school. I never wore it. Then this month I rediscovered it in the back of my closet and that is when my love for this jacket began. Ever since then I have been wearing it all the time with just about anything from floral scarves and flowy tops to v-necks with brown combat boots. I am obsessed. It has become totally worth the $10 I spent.

The lovely jacket in all its glory.

This is one of my favorite outfits to wear during the fall. It's comfortable but very stylish at the same time. I love switching up this ensemble with different colored t-shirts, scarves, and jackets. It's a fun look that's very easy to recreate and put together.

Gift Guide: 10 Gifts $20 and Under

Holiday shopping time is here once again (can you believe it?). Shopping during the holidays for your loved ones can become a bit of a challenging endeavor. Not only can shopping be challenging during the holiday season it can also become very expensive and tedious. To help you guys out with your shopping  I've decided to start a holiday gift guide series starting with this post. I'm filling my gift lists with only the coolest and most fashionable items and I'm checking them twice too!

This gift guide is proof that you can purchase awesome gifts on a budget that you're friends and family would love to receive. Here I found 10 cool (if I do say so myself) gifts that are $20 and under:

10 Universal Gifts $20 and Under

1.) Pink Metallic Makeup Bag ($15) - This makeup bag  from Victoria's Secret is a great gift. It's only $15 so if you wanted to you could use the remainder of your gift budget to fill it with some of your recipient's favorite makeup. Now that would be a cute present.

2.) Teal Knit Scarf ($14.80) - A warm knit scarf in a jewel tone is an essential winter accessory. This teal scarf is a perfect gift for any stylin' lady on your gift list. I prefer it in this great teal color but it also comes in a nice magenta hue.

3.) Fingerless Gloves ($6.80) - Gloves are very practical but finding a chic fingerless pair makes them even better. The pair featured at only $6.80 would make the perfect Secret Santa or stocking stuffer gift.

4.) Colorful Trapper Hat ($11.80) - This quirky multi-color trapper hat is both functional and fashionable. It will keep the person who receives it very warm this winter and to top it off they will also stand out in the crowd.

5.) Thermal Pajama Pants ($12.99) - These thermal pajama pants from Target come in a variety of patterns and are a fun holiday present.

6.) The Teen Vogue Handbook by Teen Vogue ($19.98) - If you regularly read my blog you know how I feel about this book because I talked about it in this post right here. The reason think it is such a great gift is because it includes stories and interviews from the fashion industry's leaders. It opened my eyes about the career that I want to work to having in the future. This book (among many other things/experiences) firmly established in my mind that I want to work in fashion. I cannot stress enough how much of an essential this book is for any teenager who wants to work in fashion whether they want to be a designer, makeup artist, writer, photographer...etc.

7.) 3-wick Candle ($20) - This lovely candle from Bath and Body Works would be the perfect present for mom. It comes in many scents and also a few seasonal variations.

8.) Studded Phone Case ($17.80) - I'm a sucker for a great and fashionable phone case. I wish this adorable studded one from Forever21 would fit my phone.

9.) Sock Set ($19.50) - This adorable sock set from Victoria's Secret would make the perfect preset or stocking stuffer. The set is available in two versions and includes three pairs of colorful tube socks.

10.) Bangle Set ($8.50) - Bracelets are always on trend in my eyes!  This feminine set comes in two colors and is only $8.50.

Stay tuned for more holiday gift guides!

Fashion: Live it, Breathe it, Read About it

Fashion is a part of who I am. I live it, breathe it, and occasionally read about. Over the past few years I have accumulated a good collection of fashion/style reference books written by some of my favorite industry leaders. What kind of person would I be if  I didn't share these little treasures with fellow fashionistas? Magazines are great but sometimes you just need a good well-written fashion book. What a better time than Thanksgiving break to cuddle up with a posh page-turner? Finally have a break off from school so take a few moments and crack open a good 'ol fashion book!
 Here are my favorites.

The One Hundred: A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own by Nina Garcia
This is the first fashion book that I ever purchased. It includes wonderful illustrations by Ruben Toledo and many interesting fashion history tidbits that you may or may not have previously known.

Classy: Exceptional Advice for the Extremely Modern Lady by Derek Blasberg
This book is exceptionally informational in a very laughable way. Complete with photos of the do's and don'ts of being a lady and inspirational quotes this book is great for anyone who wants to be fashionable and fun but also keep it classy.

The Teen Vogue Handbook by Teen Vogue
An absolute must for anyone who wants a career in the fashion industry! So much is to be learned from the pages of this book about colleges, internships, and what working in the fashion industry truly means. The Teen Vogue Handbook is filled with  stories about the industry's leaders and how they got to where they are today.

True Whit: Designing a Life of Style, Beauty, and Fun by Whitney Port with Sheryl Berk
A very relatable book full of relatable stories, how-to's, and suggestions that can be put to good use.

Fashion Inside Out: Daniel V's Guide to How Style Happens from Inspiration to Runway and Beyond by Daniel Vosovic
An interesting and unusual take on how the fashion industry really works.

Style A to Zoe: The Art of Fashion, Beauty, & Everything Glamour by Rachel Zoe with Rose Apodaca
A book on how to live chic and glamorous by one of the world's most glamorous women. Inside you will find tips and tricks of the styling trade, an insiders view on the industry and spectacular illustrations and personal photographs.

Fierce Style: How to Be Your Most Fabulous Self  by Christian Siriano with Rennie Dyball
A fierce book written by one of the fiercest designers around! This fabulous book will explain how to obtain a distinct personal style and how to rock your signature look.

I hope that you enjoy these books as much as I do and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

My Love for Cocktail Rings

I have talked about my love for a good cocktail ring many times on this blog. In fact, one of my very first posts was about rings (http://freshmenfashion.blogspot.com/2012/06/statement-rings.html)! One thing that I am really proud of is my incredibly large ring collection. I have one for almost every occaision. A great ring can add a perfect touch of glam to any outfit. Here are a few favorites of mine that I wear all the time.

Small Crystal Ring: Walmart (Can you believe it?)
 Claddagh Ring: Local Jewelry Store

Two-finger Key Ring: forever21
Claddagh Ring: Local Jewelry Store

Bow Ring: forever21

Rhinestone Band: forever21
Small Bow Ring: forever21
Mother of Pearl Ring: Artisan Made

As you can see a good majority of my favorite rings come from forever21. That is because their jewelry is very trendy and also very inexpensive. It's a good store to go to when you want  to try out a trend with out spending lots of cash. The accessories are usually of good quality for the price and always cute and chic. What's not to love about that?

Want to start your own cocktail/statement ring collection?
Try out some of these stores!

Forever21:
Macy's:
Aeropostale:
American Eagle:

Practical and Fashionable: Warm Weather Wear

Whether you're ready to admit it or not the winter is drawing near. Where I live the weather is already getting very chilly. The temperatures have been ranging on the lower side and the air is very crisp. If you're like me and attend lots of outdoor events during this weather like football games, you understand that the nights can get pretty cold this time of year. Although, giant coats, and vests are very warm they're not always the most stylish. In this post you will find some great warm weather wear that is not only practical but fashionable too.

The most important winter outerwear essential is a coat of course! Instead of the typical winter puff jacket try a more refined and totally stylish pea coat. Not only do these coats look great for the cold months of winter they are also very warm (especially a knee-length version). Coats are a big investment and can be a bit pricey so make sure that you get one that will never go out of style and that is good quality so that you can wear it year-after-year. My favorite pea coat is a black one with studs and chain detail but they also look fabulous in bright colors like red, teal, and fuchsia.
For some great coats check out stores like Kohl's.
FIND SOME GREAT PEA COATS HERE:
 http://www.kohls.com/catalog/women-coats-regular.jsp?CN=3000000093+4294737727&N=3000000093+4294737727+4294734675

An important winter accessory is the scarf. Scarves are great year-round but are perfect to add a bit of extra warmth to any outfit. Try a knit scarf in a bold hue to add a splash of color to any typical winter outfit. You can find scarves almost anywhere but H&M, forever21, and Charlotte Russe always have a great variety.
FIND SOME FABULOUS SCARVES HERE:
Forever21: http://www.forever21.com/Product/Category.aspx?br=f21&category=acc_scarf
H&M: http://www.hm.com/us/subdepartment/LADIES?Nr=4294966587#Nr=4294928758
Charlotte Russe: http://www.charlotterusse.com/thumbnail/Accessories/Scarves/pc/2116/2590.uts

Finally the last important winter accessory is definitely a great pair of gloves. Gloves are so fun! You can mix and match colors and patterns or rock an awesome pair of leather ones. Gloves are so easy to find too. I thin that a great pair of electric blue gloves with a black pea coat is a gorgeous combo.
FIND YOUR PERFECT PAIR OF GLOVES HERE:
Express: http://www.express.com/cold-weather-40/control/show/12/index.cat
Target: http://www.target.com/sb/hats-scarves-gloves-accessories-women/gloves/special-occasion/-/N-5xtbnZ5t066Z5v4hz#navigation=true&facetedValue=/-/N-5xtbnZ5t066&viewType=large&sortBy=newest&isleaf=true&navigationPath=5xtbnZ5t066Z&parentCategoryId=9975733&categoryId=4670

So quick tips that may or may not be a bit obvious for staying fashionably warm this winter are as follows:
- Wear a pair of thick tights under your jeans if you're like me and hate thermals
- Wear 2 pairs of socks instead of one
- Layer, layer, layer
