My Favorite 12 of 2012

2012 was a very significant year for me. I achieved many of the goals I had set for myself, made new friends, started high school (!!!), shared many laughs, and most importantly started Freshmen Fashion. My life changed in so many ways during this year. Hopefully, your year was just as good as mine. I want to wrap up the year by sharing 12 of my favorite things from 2012 with you guys. If you would like, I encourage you to make a set on polyvore and show me your favorite items from 2012 and tag me (@beverlylorraine) in it. I'd love to see what you've been obsessed with this year. Here are my favorites.

Fashion
As I always say "fashion is a part of me" and during this year there was no exception to my motto. In 2012 I believe I better developed my personal style "rocker-chic/glam business/pinup girl influenced/...". Also my love for everything fashion became stronger (I didn't think it was possible) thanks to this blog.
Some of my favorite fashion picks from 2012:

- Denim shirts
I bought a denim shirt from H&M similar to the shirt featured up above at the beginning of the school year and have worn it over 100 times and styled it in so many ways since then. Denim shirts are great because they are so versatile. You can dress them up with statement necklaces or dress them down with scarves and skinny jeans. What I love most about my denim shirt is that it is  medium light in color so I can pair it with dark wash skinnies for a modern look.

- Cropped Black Blazer
Also at the beginning of the school year I purchased basic black cropped blazer originally around $40 for $7 at Kohl's. The blazer shown above is very similar to mine. Everyone should own at least one basic blazer. They are comfortable, classy, and can easily dress up any graphic t-shirt or pair of jeans. Although some blazers can be pricey you can find affordable options in fun colors/patterns at stores like Charlotte Russe, Forever21, and H&M. If you buy a nice quality blazer it will last you forever and turn out to be a great investment.

-Wedge Ankle Booties
All throughout 2012 I have been rocking some seriously high wedge booties. My favorites are from the Simply Vera Vera Wang collection for Kohl's. I found them on the clearance rack for more than 50% off. It was an amazing deal. The ones featured in the picture above are very similar. You can buy yourself a pair right here

-Floral/Patterned Scarves
Scarves have been and always will be a high part of my wardrobe. They're an inexpensive way to transform and update any outfit. They're also a great way to add a bright splash of color to punch up your look. This year I've been obsessed with floral and cheetah print scarves. The one shown is from H&M.

Jewelry

-Charm Bracelets
I have been in love with charm bracelets in 2012. I've been wearing them constantly. One of my favorite Christmas gifts was from two of my best friends. They gave me the two beautiful gold Alex and Ani bracelets that are shown in the collage above. I love them! If your reading my loves, thank you very much. :) You can get your very on piece of Alex and Ani jewelry right here.

So ummmm... this was one of the coolest things ever.

Beauty

My favorite beauty products from 2012:

My daily makeup look is always all about my eyes. I rarely wear bold lipstick so most often I like to play up my eyes and eyelashes. I have been using this mascara all year long (I especially love the waterproof version) and it amps up my lash volume, adds length, and overall makes my lashes look super flirty and full. What more could I ask a mascara for?

This primer is very inexpensive (only $1!) and works wonders. I helps keep my eyeshadow last all through the school day and is an overall wonderful product.

- Dark nailpolish
I have been wearing dark nailpolish all throughtout the fall and winter. I love Revlon's nailpolish. Valentine is a great shade of dark red.

Music

Music is one of my many loves. Besides my usual faves (Greenday's new trilogy is awesome) these two albums really stood out to me.

Hot Fuss The Killers
The Killers happen to be one of my new favorite bands that I discovered in 2012. There songs have always been some of my favorites but I guess I never really knew who they were by. Hot Fuss is definitely one of my favorite albums now and "Mr. Brightside" has always been one of my favorite songs. You can buy this CD here.

Light Me Up The Pretty Reckless
I am in love with every single song on this album. I also appreciate Taylor Momsen's love for leather jackets, studs, and knee-high boots. You can buy this CD here.

Movies

I am not a huge movie fan. The only movies that I can watch from start to finish are horror movies or stupid comedies. They are the only genres that will hold my attention and keep me captivated. Ask any of my friends who have ever gone to the movies with me, if I don't find the movie interesting I will always find a way to make fun of it. I'm a pretty harsh critic.

The Perks of being a Wallflower
This movie has got to be one of the best I have ever seen. Everything about it was sheer perfection. Logan Lerman is one of my favorite actors along with Emma Watson. Me and my friend are absolutely obsessed with this movie now.  She bought me the book for Christmas and I can't wait to start reading it. The soundtrack ("Come on Eileen" anyone???) is also great. I don't believe that this movie is out on DVD yet but... you can pre-order it right here from Barnes & Noble.

Books

As you may or may not know I love reading fashion related books. Here's a post about some of my favorites.

Style Lauren Conrad
Just an all around great book. I love Lauren Conrad's style. Purchase this book here.

I hope that you all have a very safe New Year's Eve and an extremely happy 2013.

My Recent Obsession: Karmin, Rachel Zoe, and Coach

I was scrolling through Twitter the other day when I saw a tweet from Rachel Zoe saying how awesome it was to style Karmin for Coach. "Wait, what?" I asked myself (if you follow me then you know how much I love Karmin). I read further and found out that my favorite stylist was styling one of my favorite bands for a music video recorded exclusively for Coach. I knew that the outcome of this amazing mixture had to be as Rachel Zoe would say, "maj"! Soon enough I found myself watching Karmin's "Sleigh Ride" music video on repeat. As you've probably guessed the styling was awesome. So, I've decided to help you guys achieve a few of Amy and Nick's looks from the video for less.

How to get Amy's look:

Forever 21  beanie $4, Target watch $15, Nordstrom scarf $39, Kohl's turtleneck on sale for $40.60, Forever21 sunglasses $5.80, Charlotte Russe boots $45.50

In the "Sleigh Ride" video Amy was styled in a series of winter-ready outfits by the fabulous stylist, Rachel Zoe. My favorite piece she wears in the video is an orange knit hat which sells on Coach's website for $128. I found a much cheaper alternative for only $4 on forever21.com which looks pretty similar to the Coach version. Throughout the video Amy also rocks a pair of awesome knee-high black boots. I thought that these ones from Charlotte Russe were just as cool for only $45.50. I also thought that the houndstooth cape that Amy wore was very chic.

How to get Nick's look:

Target sweater $69.99, Express scarf $49.90, H&M hat $17.95, Forever21 trapper hat $9.90

In the "Sleigh Ride" video Nick's outfits are just as fashion-forward as Amy's. He absolutely rocks a furry trapper hat (I found an inexpensive look alike on forever21.com). My favorite look of his in the video was when he wore a navy blue cardigan with a striped scarf and felt fedora. I found a similar sweater from the Target + Neiman Marcus Holiday Collection by rag & bone for $69.99. The brown leather jacket Nick wore was also very nice.

Needless to say, all of the outfits styled by Rachel Zoe in this music video were both chic and perfect for the winter. Amy and Nick both looked wonderful dressed all in Coach. What a great collaboration!

To watch the "Sleigh Ride" music video, some behind the scenes footage, and to see some of Karmin's favorite Coach picks click here.

Gift Guide: The Fashionista

Having a friend with awesome fashion taste can be both a blessing and a burden. Although they'll always answer your burning style questions and are always up to date with the latest news from the runway they can also be extremely hard to shop for. It seems like they have everything. In this post I have put together 8 gifts that any fashion-forward friend would want and that are totally chic and on trend.

1.) Style by Lauren Conrad - I've wanted this book ever since it came out.  Fashion reference books are great for any fashionista.

2.) Ties - This may seem a little odd but recently I have had a minor obsession with ties, bow-ties, and menswear. I think that a nice tie is a great gift for any fan of fashion, male or female. Ties can make a button up shirt look a bit more preppy or edgy depending on how you style it. You can find the one featured here.

3.) Heart Bag - I love this colorful and fun bag. It's chain strap and quilted fabric makes it super chic. The bold pink color would add a splash on the dreary winter days ahead. The heart shape makes it the perfect gift for the quirky trend-setter.

4.) Knee-high Boots - Black knee-high boots are always in style if you ask me. I especially love these boots because of their wedge heel. Wedges are my favorites and I would rather wear a pair of them than a pair of heels any day. They are easier to walk in but still give you nice height.

5.) Rhinestone Collar Necklace - This necklace is gorgeous. It would be the perfect accessory to any simple outfit casual or dressy. I love it. It's also perfect for a holiday gift because it is festive and could be worn all throughout the season.

6.) Celebrity Pink Skinny Jeans - Celebrity Pink is my go-to brand for jeans. Their skinny jeans have wonderful stretch, trendy color choices, and a great range of sizes. They are the perfect present for anyone.

7.) Statement Necklace - Fashionistas always love a good statement necklace like this one from forever21.

8.) Pink Body Lotion - I love this lotion. It smells amazing and is really hydrating. A great Christmas gift for any fashionable friend.

A Holiday Playlist

The holiday season has started and hearing Christmas songs pretty much everywhere you go is going to be inevitable. I'm not always a huge fan of  the "classic" Christmas songs so I put together a holiday playlist featuring some of my favorite bands and artists for you guys. I hope you enjoy!

Last Christmas - Taylor Swift
We Wish You a Merry Christmas - Weezer
Naughty Naughty Naughty Children (Better Start Actin' Nice) - Grace Potter & The Nocturnals
Little Drummer Boy - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts
Wish List - Neon Trees
Merry Christmas (I Don't Wanna Fight Tonight) - Ramones
Father Christmas - The Kinks

All of these songs are available for purchase on iTunes.

Gift Guide: What to Buy the Boys

Boys are difficult to shop for. There I said it. I am a self-proclaimed amazing gifter buy truthfully shopping for guys can be extremely difficult and usually always is. If you shop for the same guys each year their presents can get a bit predictable and who wants a predictable gift? Not this girl. So here I've tried my very best to think about any type of boy, man, or guy you could be shopping for this holiday season and put together a nice versatile collection that any guy would want. At least I would want if  I were a boy.
1.) The Fashionable Fellow- A nice well-made leather jacket. This one shown in the picture is from H&M and for a real leather jacket with a lining I think $249 is a great deal especially if you're shopping for someone special that also has some serious style.

2.) The best guy friend -  The holidays are a great time of year to show your guy friend how much you appreciate your friendship. What better way to do that than with an awesome fashionable but still masculine hoodie? The one pictured above comes in a range of colors to fit any personality or style. I like it best in gray or maroon.

3.) The secret Santa / gift swap guy - Everyone knows that feeling when you get someone for Secret Santa that you know nothing about. If it's a guy it can be even more difficult. An awesome (and inexpensive) gift that is perfect for this situation is a fun pair of sunglasses. The ones featured in this post are by H&M and are only $9.95.

4.) Any guy - A nice leather belt is perfect for any guy that you need to shop for and is a perfectly versatile gift. A simple classic one will never go out of style and can be worn again and again.

5.) The boyfriend - Boyfriends can be tough to shop for especially if you've only been together for a small amount of time. A great gift that won't break the bank but that still looks really nice and thoughtful is a bottle of his favorite cologne. This gift set pictured above is by Giorgio Armani and it smells amazing if you ask me.

6.) The brother - DVDs are great gifts for anyone but they're perfect for a brother. Who knows maybe you can book some sibling bonding time to watch the movie too. Grown Ups is a favorite of mine and is available at Target.

7.) The father - Fathers are all different and have all sorts of hobbies and interests. If you're not sure what to get your daddy this year invest in buying him a really nice watch that you'll know he'll wear. This may seem like such a simple gift but if your dad's anything like mine this present will be greatly appreciated and used. The watch shown is from Target and is reasonably priced at $34.99.

8.) The music buff - Buying that music loving guy in your life's favorite band's new CD for them as a gift  probably just won't do. You know that they've surfed through iTunes for hours on end downloading every single, EP, and live album that they've ever released. Instead buy him that awesome pair of headphones that he's been talking about nonstop might be the way to go. With this gift you might just earn the title of person around. This gift is perfect for someone special because super cool headphones usually come at a slightly high cost. You can get the headphones featured at Target for $199.99.

9.) That guy who is completely and entirely impossible to shop for - You know that guy I'm talking about. The one who is too cool for video games, only likes indie music that you've never heard of, and dresses so uniquely that his clothes are only bought at thrift stores. When in doubt, buy him a really cool phone case and an iTunes giftcard. You can get cases in all sorts of colors and designs and they're also very practical too the one pictured is from Target.

Gift Guide: The Makeup Lover

When I first decided that I wanted to do a gift guide series for the holidays I automatically started thinking about characters to base the gift guides on. Then I decided that one of the guides had to be dedicated to the makeup lover.  I myself really enjoy makeup but don't know everything there is to know about it. I usually stick to my comfort zone and use just about the same products everyday rarely switching up my beauty routine. One of my friends has a love for makeup products and experimenting with different looks. When I thought about this post I instantly decided who better to write a summary on the best  makeup gifts than this friend.

Please welcome Freshmen Fashion's very first guest editor, Meghan. You may know her by her YouTube screen name meg285xo.

Meghan (left) & me (right) before our homecoming dance last month.

Here's Meghan's gift guide for the makeup lover:

1.) e.l.f. Gem 11-Piece Ultimate Gem Collection ($25) -  "Great idea for a friend who likes makeup and doesn’t have any brushes. In my collection of makeup brushes I use a majority of e.l.f. brushes because they are inexpensive and good quality. Also, if you have a friend who has a lot of makeup these could be a fun collector's item for them to receive."
2.) Korres Lip Butter ($12) - "These products are very inexpensive but amazing! There is a wide variety in the color selection to fit just about any one on your gift list. Even if you are buying for someone who isn’t head over heels into makeup all girls love a good lip balm."
3.) Maybelline The Falsies Volum Express Total Eye Look Kit ($10)  - "This great holiday gift comes with an eyeshadow quad, an eye liner, and a The Falsies mascara - one of my favorites! This gift item is great! It comes with great quality products that won't break the bank!"
4.) Hard Candy Holiday Glow Makeup Set ($5)  - "This cute kit includes 3 eyeshadows, 1 eye primer, and a blush and bronzer duo. Hard candy is an extremely pigmented brand and I highly recommend them. This kit is great to give as a stocking stuffer or if you're on a budget this kit will make a great present!"
5.) Stila Tiki Set Lip Glaze Trio ($8) - "These three gorgeous lip glosses will suit any skin tone. Having such high end glosses for under $10 is an insane deal, perfect for all of your friends!"
6.) Benefit Sexy Little Stowaways ($34)  - "This kit includes a lot of trial size products that makes it easy for a skeptical makeup lover to try a bunch of products. This is ideal for a family member or girlfriend and is a great price."
7.) Urban Decay Naked Palette 1 or 2 ($50) - "Both of these palettes are simply gorgeous! I personally own Naked 1 and use it daily. It contains all of the neutral shadows a girl could ever need." (Naked 1: http://www.sephora.com/naked-palette-P267200?skuId=1324532, Naked 2: http://www.sephora.com/naked2-P302916?skuId=1393636)

My Recent Obsession: Dollhouse Denim Jacket

In the fall of last year I made an impulse buy. I purchased a distressed studded denim jacket from Macy's by the brand Dollhouse. The reason for this impulse buy? It was on clearance. For $10. So of course being the person I am, I bought the jacket for back-to-school. I never wore it. Then this month I rediscovered it in the back of my closet and that is when my love for this jacket began. Ever since then I have been wearing it all the time with just about anything from floral scarves and flowy tops to v-necks with brown combat boots. I am obsessed. It has become totally worth the $10 I spent.

The lovely jacket in all its glory.

Casual Fall Look

Celebrity Pink Jeans (Find similar ones here), Forever21 V-Neck and Necklace, Burlington Coat Factory Jacket, Rue21 Scarf, Simply Vera Vera Wang Wedges (Find similar ones here)

This is one of my favorite outfits to wear during the fall. It's comfortable but very stylish at the same time. I love switching up this ensemble with different colored t-shirts, scarves, and jackets. It's a fun look that's very easy to recreate and put together.

Gift Guide: 10 Gifts $20 and Under

Holiday shopping time is here once again (can you believe it?). Shopping during the holidays for your loved ones can become a bit of a challenging endeavor. Not only can shopping be challenging during the holiday season it can also become very expensive and tedious. To help you guys out with your shopping  I've decided to start a holiday gift guide series starting with this post. I'm filling my gift lists with only the coolest and most fashionable items and I'm checking them twice too!

This gift guide is proof that you can purchase awesome gifts on a budget that you're friends and family would love to receive. Here I found 10 cool (if I do say so myself) gifts that are $20 and under:

10 Universal Gifts $20 and Under

1.) Pink Metallic Makeup Bag ($15) - This makeup bag  from Victoria's Secret is a great gift. It's only $15 so if you wanted to you could use the remainder of your gift budget to fill it with some of your recipient's favorite makeup. Now that would be a cute present.

2.) Teal Knit Scarf ($14.80) - A warm knit scarf in a jewel tone is an essential winter accessory. This teal scarf is a perfect gift for any stylin' lady on your gift list. I prefer it in this great teal color but it also comes in a nice magenta hue.

3.) Fingerless Gloves ($6.80) - Gloves are very practical but finding a chic fingerless pair makes them even better. The pair featured at only $6.80 would make the perfect Secret Santa or stocking stuffer gift.

4.) Colorful Trapper Hat ($11.80) - This quirky multi-color trapper hat is both functional and fashionable. It will keep the person who receives it very warm this winter and to top it off they will also stand out in the crowd.

5.) Thermal Pajama Pants ($12.99) - These thermal pajama pants from Target come in a variety of patterns and are a fun holiday present.

6.) The Teen Vogue Handbook by Teen Vogue ($19.98) - If you regularly read my blog you know how I feel about this book because I talked about it in this post right here. The reason think it is such a great gift is because it includes stories and interviews from the fashion industry's leaders.
